Taipei is Great!

Taipei really reminds me how much the US is lacking in nighttime activities! I've been eating like a pig and I'm not sure how much longer my stomach can take it but I know my mouth can't get enough of the sweet Taiwanese food!

I've been taking pictures, as usual, but haven't processed them for posting, as usual. I don't have much time in Taipei. I really should have spent more time editing in Singapore.

By the way, logging in to Google, Blogger, or Gmail from a Taiwan IP shows everything in Chinese! It doesn't sound like much but that's pretty cool to me.

Hopefully, I can put some pictures soon because I think Taipei is a lot more photogenic than Singapore but then again, I'm also a lot more cautious and hesitant to shoot here than I am in Singapore. I've seen some funny stuff!

Travel warning. There has been lots of reports of robbery, scams in Shanghai. Many of tourists have been forcibly extorted money and they were forced to use their credit cards to pay more extortion money. Many of these syndicates operate at Nanjing Road in Shanghai and kidnap tourists and drive them to an unfamiliar place and in some instances simply rob them on the spot.

These syndicates bring along a mobile VISA/credit card terminal to swip your credit cards. Please beware and warn your friends to be extra careful when visiting China and do not talk to strangers. Many of these syndicates operate in groups. Usually one innocent looking man or lady will approach you asking if you want to visit tourist sites or cafe, pubs or discos or karaokes. Next , a group will approach you saying that your friend owes them 10000USD or more. Then they will extort money. Be careful

The syndicates register chinese travel agencies which are ficticious such as 忠成船空 Zhong Chen Travel . Police are still investicating.

    One real case is
    Merchant Number : 103290047220088
    Terminal Number : 75446602

  • My friend and I were recently discussing about how we as a society are so hooked onto electronics. Reading this post makes me think back to that debate we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further advances, the possibility of copying our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could experience in my lifetime.

  • Interesting post... Looks like solid-state memory is finally beginning to take off. Hopefully we'll start seeing decreasing solid state harddisk prices in the near future. 5 dollar 32 gigabyte Micro SD Cards for your Nintendo DS flash card... sounds gooooood.

  • Memory sure is becoming cheaper and cheaper and cheaper. I'm curious as to when we will finally reach the rate of $0.01 to 1 Gig.

I wait for the day when I will finally be able to afford a 20 TB hard disk . But for now I will be satisfied with having a 32 gig Micro SD Card in my R4i.

  • I have a love-hate relationship with virtual memory because of how prices are always dropping. I hate buying SD Cards for my R4 / R4i at (seemingly) a crazy bargain price only to see it become ten percent cheaper a couple of weeks later.
